The Society was founded in Wooler in 1977 to bring together people with an interest in history (and the impact of history on today's life), especially that of North Northumberland and the Scottish Borders. It provides an annual programme of talks and field trips.
Our overall aim throughout these years has been to "keep the past alive" and in doing so:
Where and when are meetings held?
A programme of talks runs from September to April, normally at the Cheviot Centre, Padgepool Place, Wooler on the second Wednesday of the month. There are usually 2 outings each season.
Please join us for tea/coffee & biscuits from 7pm, before the talk starts at 7.30. Meetings usually finish by 9pm.

We work with other groups to discover, and to make available to everyone, the rich history of Glendale.

- Promote and encourage the study and recording of local history through talks and such other activities as may, from time to time, be organised by the Society

- published a number of leaflets and sponsored publications, including Wooler at War and Holidays in the Cheviots (see our current Publications tab). More are in production.
- produced information boards for many buildings in central Wooler and the Youth Hostel. More are to come
- The Society has been involved in several projects, including:
- restoration of the Wooler War Memorial.
- commemoration of the Battle of Flodden 1513
- commemoration of World War 1
- started to collect people’s memories of Glendale
- created a growing archive of documents, photographs & artefacts, which we’re collating and digitising to make it more widely accessible to members.
We work with other groups to discover, and to make available to everyone, the rich history of Glendale.
